In our last article, we introduced "How to Find Sake That Suits Your Taste." Did you discover a favorite bottle? That perfect cup you've found. While it's fine to just take a big gulp, a little effort can bring out the sake's "true potential." This time, we'll introduce "4 Steps" to enjoy sake more deeply.

◾️Step 1: First, Appreciate the "Color"

Like wine, start by enjoying sake with your eyes. Pour it into a clear glass or a "Janome Choko" glass with a blue double circle pattern on the bottom, then hold it up to the light.

・Colorless and clear: Often indicates a fresh, crisp taste.

・Slightly yellow or golden: A sign of more advanced aging or concentrated rice umami.

◾️Step 2: Feel the "aroma" with your nose

Before taking a sip, bring your nose close to the glass and breathe in slowly.

・Fruity aroma: Vibrant scents like apple, banana, or melon (mainly ginjo sake).

・Rich aroma: Calm scents reminiscent of freshly cooked rice or nuts (mainly junmai sake).

Simply imagining "What aromas might be hidden here?" changes how you perceive the taste.

◾️Step 3: Swirl it in your mouth

This is the key point! Like wine tasting, after taking a small sip, don't swallow immediately. Swirl it on your tongue to let it interact with air.

1. Attack: The initial sweetness or acidity upon entry.

2. Aroma: The scent that rises to your nose.

3. Aftertaste: The lingering flavor that returns from the back of your throat after swallowing.

Try to discern: "Is it sweet?" "Is it crisp?"

◾️Step 4: Change its expression with "temperature"

The greatest feature of sake is that it can be enjoyed across a wide range of temperatures, from 5°C to 55°C.

Temperature zone

Name Characteristics
5〜10℃

Snow chill / Flower chill

The aroma becomes more refined, resulting in a sharp and refreshing taste.

15〜25℃

Chilled / Room Temperature

You can best appreciate the inherent balance of the sake's flavor.

40〜50℃

Warm sake / Hot sake

The aroma unfolds, and the sweetness and savory flavor of the rice swell up.

Enjoying how it changes—refreshing when chilled, yet revealing incredible rice sweetness when warmed—is a luxury unique to sake.

◾️Summary: Be free, don't be bound by rules!

We've shared many ways, but the ultimate answer is "however you find it delicious."

・Savor the aroma luxuriously in a wine glass.

・Enjoy the ambiance in your favorite guinomi cup.

・Add ice for a casual rocks style.

Freely, and with care. Experience the story contained in every drop with all your senses.
